General Information

Who: This course is aimed at graduate and undergraduate students and researchers who work with ecological data. You do not have to be affiliated with UCSB to attend this workshop!

Where: This course will take place online via Zoom. The instructors will provide instructions and information on how to join this workshop.

When: April 1 & 2, active instruction from 9-noon PST each day with afternoons reserved for participant ‘hack-y’ hours. Note: The afternoon sessions are free-form to accomodate scheduling flexibility for participants to opt-in or out of all or part of both afternoon sessions.

Requirements: Participants must have access to a computer with a Mac, Linux, or Windows operating system. In addition, please install the specific software packages listed below.

Setup

Before the workshop, please make sure you have completed the following setup steps:

Download Videoconferencing Client

If you do not already have Zoom downloaded on your computer, please make sure to do so before the workshop. Instructions can be found here for installing Zoom.

Download/Update R and RStudio

You will need a current version of R and RStudio for this workshop. You can find instructions for installing or updating these programs here.

You are only required to follow the instructions under the Install R and RStudio or Update R and RStudio sections.

(Optional) Your own dataset(s)

Please bring one or more datasets you hope to incoroprate into your own research for the afternoon ‘hack-y’ hours.

The afternoon sessions for this workshop are intended for participants to practice importing and working with datasets from their own work. These are intended to be informal “hack-y” hours in which you will have access to instructors and helpers who can help you work with your own datasets! If you do not have your own dataset(s), you can still attend these sessions and spend the time working in the datasets used in the workshop or others you bring, we find online or in R, or which instructors or helpers may be willing to share from their own work.
